The days long mystery of a farmer named "Paco" who was unjustifiably "abducted" by ICE in Olympia, Washington, has finally been solved.
An unDivided viewer identified "Paco" as Yussef Zarate-Borbon, a 34-year-old Mexican national who was arrested by Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Marshals Service late last month. According to HSI Seattle, "Zarate is wanted in his home country for homicide and violated the terms of his admission to the U.S."
Zarate-Borbon has been detained by ICE pending removal proceedings.
As we suspected, the truth behind his arrest in a far cry from the tale told by an Olympia-area anti-ICE activist, who raised more than $12,000 on GoFundMe to help her friend and neighbor "Paco." Perhaps the only part of her story that was true, is that Zarate-Borbon owns several businesses in the area, including a small farm.
It is unclear whether GoFundMe plans to remove the fundraiser, or if people who donated can get their money back. Repeated email requests to the organizer of the fundraiser, Carissa Miller, have gone unanswered. Earlier in the day on Tuesday, she closed down comments on an Instagram video where she detailed the story of "Paco's" detainment.
GoFundMe told unDivided it is looking into the fundraiser.
Meanwhile, the worst offender in all of this (besides Zarate-Borbon himself) is The Olympian newspaper, which picked up the fictional tale of "Paco" and printed it without verifying a single element of the story. It is just the latest example of mainstream media jumping to report on false or misleading narratives around President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement efforts.
unDivided has reached out for comment from the reporter on the story, as well as The Olympian's news editors. We have not heard back.
